Personal truths. Collective Power.

In 2026, Shakespeare in Detroit begins a new chapter with The Griot Season — a series of one-person shows that center the storyteller as keeper, witness, and visionary. Inspired by the West African tradition of the Griot, this season celebrates those who carry the stories of their people through voice, memory, and truth. Each work will spotlight a singular artist, inviting audiences into intimate worlds where performance becomes legacy and language becomes lineage. The Griot Season honors the past, speaks to the present, and reimagines the future of storytelling in Detroit.
