Who we are

For more than a decade as the premiere classical theater of Detroit, Shakespeare in Detroit has pioneered outdoor and site-specific work in one of the most important cities in the country, and ignited a path for better representation in plays by the Bard that are accessible for all.

Shakespeare in Detroit is a globally-recognized organization from the BBC to Forbes and the National Endowment for the Arts, founded and led by the international director and speaker, Sam White, whose work transcends borders in classical and contemporary interdisciplinary projects and theater. Check out her TEDx Detroit and TEDx Chatham-Kent talks for background on the organization and more on our roots and company values.

The organization is returning in 2024 with one very special event in partnership with the DIA, a FREE youth production in the tradition of Shakespeare in the park and a professional ticketed production. Stay tuned for more over the coming weeks.

Thank you for visiting our site and welcome to The New Classic where world-class and authentically Detroit meets excellence and a proven track record of impact and creativity.

The first ten years are only the beginning!

Audience reviews

Hear what our audience members are saying.

"Twelfth Night was phenomenal. I laughed through most of the show. The adaptation was great and left me feeling excited about the prospect of love for everyone! The acting was stellar and the intimate setting made one feel as though they were very well acquainted with Shakespeare."
